5 easy steps to a more sustainable life.
SINGLE USE PLASTIC. Alarm bells are sounding about single use plastic and the implications for our health and the health of our children and grandchildren. Are we listening?
While plastic is unavoidable, when we start counting all the ways plastic is in our lives as containers and wrappers it’s not difficult to think of ways to reduce plastic. It’s just about changing habits. Biodegradable and compostable alternatives are available.
Grocery stores and even major chain pharmacies expect you to bring your own bag, rather than take home groceries, and household items, cosmetics etc., in a plastic bag. if it’s a small purchase, is a bag even necessary? There’s no need to use plastic bags—any washable canvas bag will do.
If a plastic bag is unavoidable, repurpose the bag as a trash can liner.
It may be possible to buy produce at the grocery store without all the plastic containers and plastic wrap. At home remove the plastic (don’t store produce in the fridge in plastic) and recycle the plastic responsibly.
Plastic wrap isn’t essential. Store fresh and prepared food in glass containers and beeswax. When you switch to glass containers, responsibly dispose of all those plastic containers lurking in the cupboard.
Buying water in plastic bottles is often unavoidable. Keep an alternative water container (plenty of materials to choose from) with you at all time.
